By breaking up the student body into four so-called "academies," each specializing in one of the arts, a closer and more personal environment between teachers and students is created. Each academy occupies a distinct building which houses the art studios next to general classrooms, administration spaces and teachers workrooms.

Tenerife Concert Hall

Santiago Calatrava
Tenerife Concert Hall
Santa Cruz de Tenerife,
Canary Islands, Spain

The auditorium is located on the waterfront in the Los Llanos are of Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife. Situated between the Marine Park and the edge of the port, the auditorium connects the city to the ocean and creates a significant urban landmark.

The all-concrete building is characterized by the dramatic sweep of its roof. Rising off the base like a crashing wave, the roof soars to a height of 58 meters over the main auditorium before curving downward and narrowing to a point. The building's plinth forms a public plaza covering the site and allows for changes in grade between the different levels of the adjacent roads.

Introduction

There are four main elements which constitute the base of Alejandro Zaera Polo and Farshid Moussavi's projects. These are as follows:

Function (Information), Matter (Behavior), Technique (Modalities), and Organization (Regimen).

Describing these four elements, the article adds that the fundamental approach of Zaera Polo and Moussavi is onetending to transform the ground into 'an active surface, a built-up layout plan from which architectural elements emerge as improbable and fluctuating forms. 'In the Yokohama terminal, the building itself becomes a surface of differing intensities and controlling traffic flows between the city and port, the inhabitants and the ship passengers. The surface becomes' pleated' to channel traffic lanes, while also playing its structural role. The ground swells up into an envelope to assert its operational role, enabling imperceptable movement between differing statuses that are both dynamic and static.

Zaha Hadid– Biography in Brief

Born in Baghdad, Iraq in 1950, Zaha Hadid studied architecture at the Architectural Association in London from 1972 and was awarded the Diploma Prize in 1977. She then became a partner of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, taught at the AA with OMA collaborators Rem Koolhaas and Elia Zenghelis, and later led her own studio at the AA until 1987.

More recently, she held the Kenzo Tange Chair at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University; the Sullivan Chair at the University of Illinois, School of Architecture in Chicago; and has held guest professorships at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg, the Knolton School of Architecture, Ohio and the Masters Studio at Columbia University, New York. In addition, she was made an Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Fellow of the American Institute of Architecture and a Commander of the British Empire, 2002. She is currently Professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria and is the Eero Saarinen Visiting Professor of Architectural Design for the Spring Semester 2004 at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut.

Hadid has become known as an architect who consistently pushes the boundaries of architecture and urban design. Her work experiments with new spatial concepts intensifying existing urban landscapes in the pursuit of a visionary aesthetic that encompasses all fields of design, ranging from urban scale through to products, interiors and furniture. Best known for her seminal built works, her central concerns involve a simultaneous engagement in practice, teaching and research.
